Pilot Regions

REGION RISK ANALYSIS

Our Associated partner SINTEF conducted a climate-related risk data mapping using the European Climate Risk Typology to understand the weather conditions with the highest impact in the selected regions of West Athens, Leipzig, Gabrovo, Trondelag, Zadar, and Valencia.

The risk typology helps adaptation and resilient strategy formation by visualising the climate risk in European regions based on the following metrics; future climatic impact drivers, natural hazards, exposure, sensitivity, and capacity.

The analyses show that the effects of climate change will be observed disproportionately across the various regions. Valencia, Western Athens, and Gabrovo will see larger changes in air temperature and heat wave days, dry days in a row and less change in heavy precipitation days than the other pilot regions (and the European average)

These three regions will also be the most vulnerable to natural hazards with Valencia facing the highest rates than the European average on all hazards. West Athens rates comparably high coastal dynamics and landslide hazards. Whereas, Gabrovo rates highest of all regions on landslides and second highest on wildfires.
