This year’s European Climate Change Adaptation Conference (ECCA) was held in Rimini, Italy, from 16 to 18 June, bringing together experts, researchers, and public authorities working to advance climate resilience. The event showcased the progress of numerous EU-funded projects and real-world examples of adaptation measures.

We’re proud to announce that SOTERIA actively participated in two sessions, presenting its results and strengthening collaboration with other projects and initiatives.

On Tuesday morning, SOTERIA partners were present at the co-organized session with PIISA (sister project ) on  “Innovative climate insurance solutions for ‘Shared Resilience” chaired by Oihana Luque (ICA). This session explored how climate insurance can help bridge gaps between vulnerable communities, businesses, and governments. The goal was to promote innovative insurance mechanisms that mitigate financial losses, foster shared resilience, and support adaptation at all levels of society. The session featured the following  expert panelists: 

• Oleksandr Sushchenko (UFZ, SOTERIA) discussed how results-based frameworks can inform sustainable insurance products and drive measurable resilience through key performance indicators, taking the Valencia CS as an example
• Sina Rühland  (UFZ, SOTERIA) presented a case study on flood preparedness, using behavioral economics to enhance individual engagement in risk prevention.
• Heikki Tuomenvirta (Finnish Meteorological Institute, PIISA) introduced tools like dashboards for homeowners and applications for farmers, helping citizens better understand and manage the economic impacts of climate change.
• Laura Trentini (AMIGO S.r.l., PIISA) highlighted the need for harmonized and standardized risk and loss data to support effective insurance design and decision-making.

In the afternoon, Elena Lopez Gunn (ICA) and Sina Rühland (UFZ) animated a roundtable on Insurance solutions as a financing tool, using once again the CS of Valencia and the preliminary outputs and results of SOTERIA. The MIP4Adapt Thematic Working Group hosted this session on Financing Climate Adaptation, and it was done in collaboration with 5 other EU projects (CLIMATEFIT, REGILIENCE, CARDIMED, ARCADIA, and NATALIE). This session focused on transferring innovative financial structures and instruments for adaptation.
