Climate change is hitting cities hard. In the Valencian Community, the risks are clear—rising temperatures, drought, and extreme weather events. How is the region responding? In a recent episode of Insuring Tomorrow’s World (in Spanish), Ciro Pascual from the Generalitat Valenciana and Gabriela Alonso from BC3 shared how Valencia is adapting.
Here’s what we learned:
1. Nature-Based Solutions Are Taking the Lead
Valencia is investing in solutions that work with nature—not against it.
- Green spaces to reduce urban heat
- Wetlands to manage floods
- Urban forests to absorb CO₂ and support biodiversity
These are practical, proven interventions. And they bring co-benefits for public health and quality of life.
2. Collaboration Is Key
Public-private partnerships are driving progress.
Local governments work closely with researchers, businesses, and citizens.
Each plays a role in designing and implementing climate strategies.
It’s not just about top-down policy. It’s about shared responsibility.
3. Research Supports Action
Data and science guide decisions. BC3 provides evidence on climate risks, socio-economic vulnerabilities, and effective adaptation options. That knowledge feeds directly into planning. It’s a model worth following.
